Sleightsburgh Artist Studio
An Esopus studio for artist Stephen E. Lewis, shaped by the need for natural light within a constrained site. I served as designer and general contractor, developing the design, conducting daylight studies, preparing permit drawings and coordinating construction.
CHALLENGE
Create a working studio on a sloping site while bringing daylight into a building whose proximity to the property line restricted windows. The design needed to address both the relationship to the ground and the placement of skylights, studying how light would enter and move through the artist’s workspace.
PROCESS
I conducted numerous light studies to establish skylight locations and assess daylight within the working space. I translated those findings into the design and permit drawings, then coordinated trades and managed construction, carrying the lighting strategy through to execution.
OUTCOME
A completed studio that uses overhead daylight to address the limitations of its site and support the artist’s practice. The project connects environmental study with hands-on delivery, bringing design, permitting and construction together under my direction.
