Sparrow Desk
A modular study carrel developed as an alternative to the conventional institutional cubicle, combining an individual workspace with a geometry capable of producing multiple configurations and larger spatial arrangements.
CHALLENGE
To rethink the ubiquitous study carrel as a designed piece of furniture rather than a generic partitioned workstation—providing privacy, accessibility, and individual workspace while allowing multiple units to form varied collective arrangements.
PROCESS
The geometry of the individual desk was developed simultaneously with the patterns created when multiple units are combined. Rather than relying on a single repetitive grid, Sparrow can be arrayed in different configurations to create changing relationships between individual workspaces, circulation, and the larger room. Accessibility was integrated into the same design logic through the development of a specialized movable work surface and hinge mechanism.
OUTCOME
A study-carrel system that operates at two scales: as an individual piece of furniture and as a modular element for organizing larger environments. The project also produced a patented ADA hinge, integrating accessibility into the system without compromising its overall geometry or character.
